Beauty Bloggers Get Tough

Written by Elizabeth Toledo
With all the time my kids spend in Arizona, I thought I should get them passports.  Even if a judge temporarily blocked the goofball state profiling law, you never know.  A few years ago a cop pulled me over on an Arizona road about 90 miles from the border for reasons that were never officially noted, came to the passenger window, and demanded to know if I had weapons or drugs in the car.  When she kept repeating the question with her hand hovering over her holster I knew for sure it would not end pretty.   I’ve always thought…

The Pom Pom Bully

Written by Elizabeth Toledo
It is imperative that we recognize cyberbullying for what it is – a symptom of the larger problem of relational aggression. -       Teenager Dominique Napolitano, Girl Scouts USA I’ve been trying to remember the first time I was bullied at school.  Experts say bullying starts in about the second grade but my memory only takes me back to seventh grade when a girl on the spirit squad decided that she would beat me up for thinking I was all that on the cheerleading squad.  It was such a lopsided fight that she made a bully appointment, deciding on Monday that…

Sex Ed Controversy

Written by Elizabeth Toledo
This blog originally appeared on RH Reality Check. Gay slurs and erotic art. These, apparently, are fighting words.  Educators in Helena, Montana are trying to stop elementary school kids from hurling hateful epitaphs at one another, and they’d like to use erotic art to help older teens learn about sex and relationships. This and more has local residents like Pastor Rick DeMato calling local educators ungodly, and claiming that the local school district has “been taken over by those in high places that wish to eradicate Christian morals in America.” More on the thinly veiled Obama attack later. This new…

Pirate Public Relations

Written by Elizabeth Toledo
Even pirates are in the PR business. The “PR Play of the Week” – as designated by PR Week’s Tonya Garcia – was awarded to the pirates earlier this month. In fact, the PR Play Rating was “ingenious”, which beat the “savvy” rating that myself and colleagues received a few years ago for our Free EC promotion. Professional jealousy aside, the pirate public relations campaign showcases the value of publicity even for the most profound uphill reputation battles. In this case the “pirates” attempted to reposition themselves as something like a “coast guard.” Pirate spokesman Sugule Ali called the New…

Hunger Knows No Recession

Written by Elizabeth Toledo
Almost every day New Yorkers pass by someone asking for money, in the subway, on the sidewalk, in the park. Homelessness, hunger and persistent poverty are so visible we sometimes literally trip over the poor. Most of us look the other way not because we don’t care, but because solutions to these problems seem overwhelming. More than a million people are hungry and can’t afford to buy food in New York – and that’s why Camino PR was honored to take on a client at the forefront of both alleviating hunger and offering real and compassionate help that creates a…

Talking about abortion in Mexico

Written by Elizabeth Toledo
Mexico City pays for early abortion for any women who seeks it.  Contrast that to the U.S. healthcare reform efforts, which have devolved into a debate over how best to reassure taxpayers that federal funds will not be used to pay for women to access abortion. We can learn a lot by studying the communications strategies of Mexican health advocates, who a few years ago defied all odds and legalized first trimester abortion in Mexico City. “We didn’t take the streets, we took the media”, observed Maria Luisa Sanchez Fuentes, one of the primary leaders of the Mexican legalization movement. We recently…
